Cell Phone accessibility

January 11th, 2010   (10348 views )

The Captchas broke a lot of cell phone access.. which isn't much fun.

So, today I've worked up some code that detects cell phone users and shows them a text based captcha instead of the image based one.

This makes me nervous however, because there is very little testing I can do before releasing. So please, try your phones out and let me know how it works.

Awesome. I didn't have much trouble with my Blackberry other than the extra step. OperaMini takes form fields and makes you enter it through an editor, instead of in the field itself, so it can be slightly problematic. The CAPTCHA itself was never a problem though. Thanks for the consideration for us ubernerds who keep constant access with our PDAs and cell phones. :D

And as far as testing feedback... OperaMini has no problem with the regular CAPTCHA, but blackberry's browser was very slow at loading it. Now its just kind of cumbersome to read with default settings. I basically see:

User: _________________
Password: ______________

How many colors below:
Thomas, Fifty Five, green, Backpack

(I hope this formats right)

Alright, I lied. Once my browser reloaded the site, I type in my user/pass, then enter the cell captcha (OperaMini) and whether I click "Update Captcha" or "Login" I keep being returned to the login screen with no error. I've entered 5 different captchas, and get returned each time.

This is still an issue. When I use operamini, I get returned to the login with no error. I can use my default blackberry browser now, but none of the javascript buttons work (banking, buying eq, etc) hence me using OperaMini.
